About the project

Steve Coleman concert archives: preserving a living musical history

The Music Archives brings together concert information, recordings and photographs documenting the music of Steve Coleman, Five Elements and related ensembles. Its purpose is to preserve the context of each performance: when and where it took place, who played, and which pieces were performed.

From a personal collection to a connected catalogue

The project grows from a personal collection of concert recordings and tour photographs assembled by Dimitri Louis / DiMiCoLoGy. Material previously organised in catalogues and folders is being connected through a shared structure: each concert can contain several recordings, with individual tracks linked to their performance. Concert dates, venues, lineups and setlists help make the collection easier to explore across different tours and periods.

The published catalogue currently includes performances dating back to the 1980s alongside more recent concerts. These documents offer different ways to follow the music over time: through the musicians involved, the repertoire performed and the changing settings of live performance. The archive is being documented progressively, with information reviewed and completed as the collection grows.

Listening, documentation and life on tour

Audio recordings, video and photography complement the written concert records. Tour journals and behind-the-scenes material have a distinct place in the project, preserving moments on the road alongside the performances themselves. Selected examples introduce the collection, while access to the wider catalogue and private listening is managed separately.

This is an independent archival project. Its aim is to help listeners explore Steve Coleman’s live music and to preserve the relationships between concerts, musicians and recordings for future discovery.
